When you're making a biopic of Freddie Mercury, what actor do you imagine donning spandex and a moustache? Yes, GK Films thought of Sacha Baron Cohen too.
The Bruno and Borat star has signed on to play Queen's front man in GK's upcoming music movie. It will follow the formative years of Queen as the band gradually rise to success, culminating in their performance at Live Aid in 1985.
Scripted by Peter Morgan (now tackling a different type of Queen - ho ho ho), this is one of those rare band pictures that sounds promising from the very start. Especially because Baron Cohen would probably love taking a pop at screaming Flash Gordon's high notes. GK Film's Graham King is certainly excited:
"Queen is one of the greatest rock bands of all time, and a music brand all unto itself," King's statement announced. "Freddie Mercury was an awe-inspiring performer, so with Sacha in the starring role coupled with Peter’s screenplay and the support of Queen, we have the perfect combination to tell the real story behind their success."
Rock on, Sacha Baron Cohen. Rather this than We Will Rock You on stage. Especially as it's a chance to hear Bohemian Rhapsody, We Are The Champions and Another One Bites The Dust on the big screen. The main question now is: who will they cast as Brian May? Someone's presumably already mentioned Michael Sheen...
