If you went to the Raindance Film Festival this year - or followed our coverage - you'll be well aware that How Do You Write a Joe Schermann Song? was easily the best film of the festival. In fact, Raindance agreed and gave it the top award: Best Film of the Festival.
So it's great to see the witty, lovely, toe-tapping post-modern musical up for yet another gong. This time, it's the Gotham Awards. "For me, it’s equivalent to a New York City version of the Academy Awards for independent films. LA has the Indie Spirit Awards…NY has the Gothams!" says director Gary King, clearly trying to hide his disappoint that it's got nothing to do with Batman. But yeah, if you saw the film (and, like me, loved it) or want to increase the odds of actually seeing it in UK cinemas, take 30 seconds out of your Monday and vote for Joe Schermann Song to get through the first round of the Gotham Audience Award. Follow the link, select How Do You Write a Joe Schermann Song? along with four other films (Beasts of the Southern Wild, Chasing Ice, Silver Linings Playbook and Call Me Kuchu are all on the shortlist and are equally fantastic) and you'll give a boost to an up-and-coming director, a talented composer (Ken Lampl) and an absolutely stonking lead actress (Christina Rose). If you still need convincing, here's our review and an interview with the director and star - and the trailer:
