Film review: Wadjda

Every now and then, a film comes along that changes the world. Sometimes, you don't even realise it's doing it.

World War H – or hate’s not all that

What do Shyamalan, World War Z and Man of Steel have in common? Hype - and hate.

With its low-budget, handheld style and box office success, Paranormal Activity was a certified phenomenon. So much so that it now will have two sequels, one of them specific to Japan.

Titled Tokyo Night, this Paranormal Activity 2 is not a remake of the original but a direct follow-on from Oren Peli's film. And so we see an exchange student travel back home after visiting San Diego, only to unwittingly bring something back with her. And by something, we mean a camcorder and some very loud bumps in the night.

The producers are keen to cash in on the movie's popularity: "Paranormal Activity was a huge success with Japanese audiences and we feel confident that our own Japanese continuation of the franchise can find an enthusiastic genre audience both here and overseas."

Directed by Toshikazu Nagae, who wrote the screenplay as well, Paranormal Activity: Tokyo Night will star Noriko Aoyama as its home video-recording victim. With our own Paranormal sequel released here around Hallowe'en, this hits its home territory in December. We'll no doubt get it soon after.
