Film review: Wadjda

Every now and then, a film comes along that changes the world. Sometimes, you don't even realise it's doing it.

World War H – or hate’s not all that

What do Shyamalan, World War Z and Man of Steel have in common? Hype - and hate.

Those foolish enough to follow @iFlicks on Twitter will know that I saw FrightFest's closing film A Lonely Place to Die earlier this week. A rather gripping little thriller, it sees a group of innocent people rock-climbing in the Scottish Highlands, only for some evil Scottish hunters to turn up, lock a girl in a box underground and shoot people. With guns.

It got me thinking about the country's depiction in movies. So I tweeted this:

The following day, I got an email from the Scottish Tourism Board informing me that despite appearances, the country is actually a very lovely place to visit. And so they asked me to reassure people that Scotland isn't full of cannibalistic mutants hiding in caves waiting to shoot me and feed me to werewolves.

If I refused to retract my aspersions, they added, they would kidnap me, take me to Scotland, and hand me over to the cannibalistic mutants hiding in the caves who would then shoot me and feed me to a werewolf.

So to placate the Scottish Tourist Board, here's a poster to remind you all that whatever FrightFest suggests, visiting Scotland is a great idea:
