We all worried it would happen. Amidst the flurry of Rachel Weisz rumours and Sam Mendes picking up the megaphone, there was a sneaking suspicion that EON's financial mess might jeopardise James Bond's next outing. And now it's been confirmed: James Bond will not return - for a couple of years.
Producers Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli released a joint statement today explaining the postponed status of Fleming's secret agent:
"Due to the continuing uncertainty surrounding the future of MGM and the failure to close a sale of the studio, we have suspended development on Bond 23 indefinitely. We do not know when development will resume and do not have a date for the release of the film."
And so 007 gets his license revoked. Bond 23 will get back on track eventually - but not in time for its original 2011 release - especially after such strong box office performances by both Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. But for now, the news is a tough blow to take. I'm off to sit in a shower. Hopefully with Eva Green.
