Iron Man Three Review

It's not a superhero movie. It's a Shane Black movie with superheroes in it. And that makes it awesome.

"I had the craziest dream last night, about a girl who was turned into a swan..."

Natalie Portman's on freaky voiceover duty in the trailer for Darren Aronofsky's upcoming movie, Black Swan. Giving an unsettling edge to an interesting tale, what first looked like a dull ballet picture has sprung into life as a dark thriller.

Portman plays Nina, a New York ballerina who is pushed by her mother into the competitive world of professional dance. As her company prepares Swan Lake for the new season, director Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassell) casts Nina instead of incumbent prima ballerina Beth (Winona Ryder) as the lead. But as she is required to master both the innocence of the White Swan and the sensuality of the Black Swan, a rival appears for Nina's part: Lily (Mila Kunis). Cue twisted rivalry and bad things happening.

As the two dancers compete for the role, Nina starts to embrace her dark side - think smashed mirrors, trashed dressing rooms and probable mental breakdown. With some eerie soundtrack work from the legendary Clint Mansell, Darren Aronofsky's drama looks like an agile and disturbing beast; a modern, unique take on All About Eve crossed with Rosemary's Baby.

Black Swan opens in the US on Friday 1st December, so we'll get it in the UK sometime next year. With an unpredictable project again turning good, expect another tour de force from the director of The Wrestler. Also expect it to feature at some point during the London Film Festival - it's been doing the rounds at Venice and Toronto, and is getting some very positive buzz.

Now the central casting news has had time to settle, Sony can start moving forwards with their production schedule for Spider-Man. The untitled 3D reboot, which stars Andrew Garfield, will start shooting this December, ComingSoon has discovered.

Directed by Marc Webb, the leaner, more character-driven take on Spidey will shoot principally in LA. The rest of the cast is still yet to be confirmed, but Marc Webb is setting himself a wide timespan to complete Sony's superhero restart, which is due out on Friday 3rd July 2012.

While they're brushing up Garfield's costume with lashings of CGI, Sony will also be finishing off Men In Black III. Barry Sonnenfeld's second sequel, which stars Tommy Lee Jones, Will Smith, Josh Brolin and Jemaine Clement, also has a production date confirmed. The sci-fi will start shooting in New York this September. That one's due out Friday 25th May 2012.

Here it is: the new international trailer for Avatar.  The official full-length trailer (i.e. not a teaser) is hitting the online world tomorrow, but it's supposedly identical to the one above. We get more of a look at Pandora, Cameron's uber-CGI 3-D paradise, and a bit more of the plot. The verdict? A resounding meh.

Ok, so the visuals still look good, but we've already gathered that one - on Sunday 1st November, the 3 1/2 minute trailer will be played on the world's biggest screen at the Cowboys stadium in Arlington, Texas. Millions in the crowd will make it the largest live preview of a movie to date, let alone the folks at home watching on FOX Sports.

"We will send a message: that this is our land!" yells marine Jake (Sam Worthington) in his mind-controlled Avatar body, bred especially for bowling around Pandora with Really Big Guns. But in between the mining of the planet's natural resources and the terrible looking love interest, James Cameron's Avatar is looking increasingly average story-wise. After that crazy hype machine working overtime, it's a massive anti-climax; when it comes to tight-lipped PR campaigns, less is always more. Now we've got more, I'm not sure I want it. Judging by this, heck, I prefer Titanic. At least that had Billy Zane.

Maybe I'm being too harsh. Is this a big blue let-down? Your thoughts? Read on for the full video.
